Cousin Brucie!

I hosted the Friars Celebrity Interview series with the legendary Cousin Brucie—an hour, one-on-one interview about his career, with stories about Elvis, his introducing the Beatles at Shea stadium, and the evolution of rock music.

Here's a tidbit:

I asked him: "If you could place one year of rock music in a time capsule for future generations which year would you pick?"

"1965—it built on the foundation of American rock from the 50's and was open to include the English wave and the West Coast sound."

By the way, Dick Clark's answer to the same question was 1957.

Both were memorable years.

SPECIAL SHOW ANNOUNCEMENT

Here's the complete text of a press release on my forthcoming special show:

‘Confidentially,’ a Special Presentation of Catch A Rising Star: ‘Bill Boggs Talk Show Confidential’ April 5

Monticello, N.Y. (March 14, 2008) – Bill Boggs, a staple in New York City media for years, has something confidential to tell you on April 5. Actually, he’s got a lot of confidential things to tell you.

"Bill Boggs Talk Show Confidential" (developed at the fabled John Houseman Theater in the spring of 2003) is a humorous and enlightening one-man show featuring stories, rare videos and songs about the world of television Boggs has inhabited for the past 30 years.
A special presentation of Catch A Rising Star, “Bill Boggs Talk Show Confidential” comes to the Catch stage at Monticello Gaming and Raceway on Saturday April 5. This unique show, which is currently playing at the Triad Theater on West 72nd Street in New York City, is an experience like no other. Show time at Monticello is 8 p.m.

Boggs is a four-time Emmy Award winning television talk show host, a popular after-dinner speaker and master of ceremonies, an accomplished stage performer, a noted TV show producer and a frequently published journalist. His wide-ranging and diverse career has included hosting the seminal New York talk show, "MIDDAY LIVE WITH BILL BOGGS," for Metromedia and FOX for 12 years, and creating and hosting "BILL BOGGS CORNER TABLE" on Food Network since the network's debut in the mid-1990s.

In addition, Boggs has anchored the news for NBC-TV; and hosted "Comedy Tonight," a syndicated comedy show, for Fox Television; a game show, "All Star Anything Goes" for CBS-TV; and a live Saturday morning talk show," Saturday Morning Live," for Metromedia.
Boggs was the host and creator of the PBS television show, Home Cooked Classics. He's also currently serving as the energetic on stage force behind Simon Super Chefs Live, a 24-city culinary food and wine show presented around the country in Simon Malls. He pioneered the first-ever national restaurant review show, TV Diners on Food Network and he’s interviewed notable guests on CNBC's Let's Talk Stock and also on Historic Traveler and Freeze Frame (on the Travel Channel).

Boggs, who has also won acclaim on stage for his singing and story telling in the Off Broadway hit, "Our Sinatra," created and starred in "A Fine Romance," at New York's four-star "Restaurant Daniel.”

Boggs is indeed a noted food, lifestyle and travel authority, having interviewed and worked with many of the world's top restaurateurs and chefs, and has also appeared as himself in a dozen dramatic movie and TV show roles. In addition, he has authored a novel, "At First Sight," written for The New York Times and other prestigious national and international periodicals and served as the executive producer for both the groundbreaking "Morton Downey, Jr. Show" and "Court TV.”

Boggs has anchored live news shows for MSNBC and hosted "Freeze Frame" and "Historical Traveler" for the Travel Channel. He is the host of Showtime's "Boxing Report Update," and was seen in the Fall of 2002 in the new syndicated show, "House Beat.”

In 2007, HarperCollins published Boggs’ widely-praised book, Got What It Takes?: Successful People Reveal How They Made It To The Top. The book is based on success secrets uncovered in his interviews with leaders in diverse fields—among those included in the book are Sir Richard Branson, Renee Zelwegger, Diane von Furstenberg, Clive Davis, Donald Trump, Matt Lauer, Joe Torre and many others. He is also a featured columnist for The Good Life Magazine, Crush Magazine and Black Tie International Magazine and has written several pieces for The New York Times.

Boggs brings all of his lifetime of work to the stage in “Bill Boggs Talk Show Confidential.” Confidentially we can tell you that it will be an awesome night that won’t be forgotten.

Bill Boggs on TV

Check out my new video link on the front page at www.billboggs.com.

Or CLICK HERE to go directly to the video page.

It's in The Post!

That is, I'm in The New York Post today in Cindy Adams' column:

"TV's Bill Boggs, whose "Got What It Takes?: Successful People Reveal How They Made It to the Top" is out in paperback next month, was careening through Midtown traffic holding an empty Burberry leash. Chasing after his dog, who'd somehow slipped his collar. He finally grabbed his hound safely, and Burberry even replaced Rover's fashionable plaid set. Bill's next might be "Successful People Reveal How They Made It Through Panic."

Only in New York, kids, only in New York."

On June 12th I'm hosting a lunchtime interview series at the Friars Club of New York, with "Cousin" Bruce Morrow—the legendary radio DJ. It's sure to be fun.

Have a merry March!

Photos from La Vie in Vegas

Here are some photos from my trip to vegas that illustrate my previous post...

BILL BOGGS AND "LA VIE IN LAS VEGAS"

I was set for a Simon Super Chef Live show at Caesar's Palace in the middle of July--so why not head out to Food City, ok maybe it's supposed to be Sin City--but I'm happy enough to let my rapacious appetite do the sinning.

First Vegas stop was not actually in Vegas, it was the Red Rock Casino, Resort and Spa in Henderson. It's far enough away from the strip that you feel the slower pace of desert life. Carol and I mounted a couple of horses over at the Bonnie Springs Ranch for an excursion through scenic Red Rock Canyon and then galloped back to Red Rock Resort for two terrific meals at the "TBONES" Restaurant--where the $90.00 serving of King Crab legs brings you five large legs perfectly prepared. The resort's pool area sports the iconic LOVE Sculpture by Robert Indiana.

On the strip, we visited Bellagio and my favorite spot in all of Vegas--the little outdoor cafe operated by JeansGeorge's ''PRIME". Its vista on Lake Bellagio and the Paris Hotel across the street is uniquely intimate for flashy and sprawling Vegas--it's the most romantic place in town for a drink. Of course we needed dinner at Bellagio, too, and I can strongly urge anyone headed for a little Vie in Vegas to visit the jewel box LE CIRQUE Restaurant. It has all the glory, history, and charm of the legendary Sirio Maccioni creation that first appeared on East 65th street in New York and is now going strong at Beacon Court in New York and also Mexico City, and of course, Las Vegas. Tell the lovely manager, Morgani, that Bill Boggs sent you. The desserts at Le Cirque are the best in town.

Down the strip at the Venetian, Carol and I had wonderfully fresh heirloom tomatoes at the bar at B & B, the Mario Batali-Joe Bastianich creation, which is the closest thing you'll find to New York's "Babbo" in town. Then, a short stroll over to "DAVID BURKE at the Venetian" to have dinner with David Burke himself and present him with the coveted FIVE STAR DIAMOND AWARD. I'm an International Consultant for the award.

The next day, somehow, hunger struck us again and it was off to the new Wynn Resort for lunch at ''THE COUNTRY CLUB''--a new American Steakhouse under the direction of Executive Chef Rene Lenger. His gazpacho and fresh shrimp are top picks there for a light lunch. The lunch was a warm up for dinner that night at Wynn's ''SW STEAK," under the direction of my longtime friend, the talented chef David Walzug. His duck presentation was extraordinary and Carol feasted on a dazzling triple-tiered shell fish arrangement with shrimp, tuna tartare and mammoth King Crab legs.

One more meal to mix in and that was at the Alain Ducasse creation ''MIX IN LAS VEGAS" atop the new second tower at the Mandalay Bay Resort. We sat in a modernist cube-booth and watched the sun go down while toying with an intriguing "pomegranate foam" amuse bouche. As night falls the place turns into one of the town's hottest bar and dining scenes. Fabien Riviere, the manager, is the man to see for that special "booth."

I also had a chance to be a guest on Ed Bernstein's long-running television interview show to discuss (and shamelessly plug) my HarperCollins book, GOT WHAT IT TAKES? And then off to work with Food Network colleague, Duff Goldman, "The Ace of Cakes." The show went on at the "Forum of the Caesar's"--which is probably one of the best places to shop in the U.S. And no matter what anyone ever tells you about Vegas-take it from me--it is one of the world's top culinary destinations and will continue to grow in that direction for years to come.

Ah, La Vie in Vegas, now when can I return?

"Bill - After staying up till 4am last night/this morning to meet a promised deadline, I arose at 7:59am and scrambled to pop on the CBS Early Show. I caught your segment (was taping it just in case), as did my Mom - and we both agreed you were so wonderfully upbeat, concise, totally prepared, and you certainly packed lots of pertinent info into the oh-too-short amount of time allotted to you and Harry Smith...but you looked and sounded like the handsome, articulate, compassionate pro that you always were! Congrats to you, Bill. I find the topic of your book very intriguing, and look forward to getting a copy and meeting you to sign it in person... "

Wednesday Gems!

I was interviewed by Frank Diamond for his Wednesday Gems column today in The (Philadelphia) Evening Bulletin. Just CLICK HERE to read the feature.

Here's a tidbit:

"Bill Boggs is too stinking successful. I mean it'd be easy to hate him if you were the jealous, petty type. Which I'm not. Really. Boggs was raised right here in Philadelphia, attended Lincoln High School and then the University of Pennsylvania. He came up through the same streets as you and I did, in other words. Except, he's gone much further. He's won four Emmy Awards, helped launch entire TV networks (Court TV), and has even sung in an off-Broadway hit called "Our Sinatra." In addition, he's a loyal and dedicated husband and father. He's like the guy from high school who becomes so successful that it lets the air out of every other "so what have you been up to" conversation at the reunion. Now, he's had the temerity to come out with a book called Got What It Takes? Successful People Reveal How They Made It To the Top. I jumped at the chance to interview Boggs when the opportunity presented itself. Lucky for him that I'm not the jealous, petty type."

RAVE for GOT WHAT IT TAKES? on FORBES.COM

Tara Weiss just reviewed my book on FORBES.COM: "It's not a dense business book you have to force yourself to open. Boggs conducted 44 interviews with leaders across all industries and the result is an energizing, quick read that's full of interesting anecdotes about how the best of the best made it...the interviewees' stories are a fun read and a look into how average people became extraordinary... "Well written and organized. Particularly impressed by the way you present the material...by subject matter with comments from those interviewed...very effective. I think the book has the potential of helping many people and being a big success...Impressed also by the larger quotes listed and not lifted from a passage to follow. New Arrival!

The book is selling fast at the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Charlottesville. Word of mouth at UVA sure spreads quickly. Here's the latest comment: Hi Bill,I just wanted to let you know that the copy I ordered from Barnes & Noble arrived. Your book is a wonderful mix of light and serious, and I am absolutely impressed with the format. While it has the positive attributes of a "self-help" book (which EVERYONE loves to read and learn from), it also gives us realistic and candid glimpses into the celebrities who are REAL PEOPLE with real parents, talents, amazing insight and intelligence, and insecurities. -DEBBIE

Diane Warren To Appear On OPRAH

Diane Warren, one of the contributors to my book Got What It Takes? will be appearing on OPRAH later this month. (We'll let you know the exact date as soon as we receive it.) As you probably know, Diane is one of the world's most successful songwriters, with songwriting credits that include Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Elton John, Tina Turner, LeAnn Rimes, Toni Braxton, ‘N Sync, Britney Spears, Cher, Christina Aguilera, Faith Hill, Mariah Carey, Reba McEntire, Aerosmith, Ginuwine, Mary J. Blige, Aaliyah, Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Roberta Flack, and many others. It was a great pleasure interviewing her and I think you'll enjoy what she has to say on the subject of success.

5 Stars at Amazon for GOT WHAT IT TAKES?

I'm pleased to see readers are enjoying the book. Here's one review from Amazon.com:

Reviewer:
Thomas Duff "Duffbert" (Portland, OR United States) "I enjoy reading about how others have successfully navigated life and their careers. I was pleased to get the opportunity to read an advanced copy of Got What It Takes?: Successful People Reveal How They Made It to the Top by Bill Boggs. While you still have to filter their words and experiences through your own reality, it's a great read for those who are into personal improvement. Contents: Introduction - The Reasons for Success One - The Path to Success: Find Your Path; Get Hired; Capitalize on Luck and Timing; Make Good Decisions Two - The Mind-sets of Success: Seize Opportunity; Identify Your Drive, Mission, and Purpose; Cultivate Self-Confidence; Strengthen Your Will to Prevail; Defy Category Three - The Practices of Success: Work Hard; Collect Wisdom; Don't Take Anything for Granted; Take the Risk; Develop Excellent Everyday Practices Four - The Challenges of Success: Confront Fears, Insecurity, and Other Inner Demons; Learn to Cope with Stress; Allow for Regrets, Failures, and Mistakes; Overcome Adversity; Resist Ruinous Temptations; Keep Your Life in Balance Five - Advice for Success: Know When to Reassess; Use What You've Got; Industry Advice from the Pros Acknowledgements Boggs got the opportunity to interview a large number of well-known and successful people in various industries. There were some names I didn't recognize, but a large number were household names... Maria Bartiromo, Sir Richard Branson, Jim Cramer, Mario Cuomo, Christie Hefner, Matt Lauer, and Norman Lear, to name just a few. The interviews appeared to be very conversational, and the personalities of the different people shine through very well. Boggs took a somewhat different approach than most books of this sort, however. Instead of taking the "person per chapter" route, he divides the book into success components, like working hard, confronting insecurity, and keeping your life in balance. Then for that particular subject matter, he'll pull in the pieces of the interviews that corresponded to that. Seeing how people like Cramer, Anna Quindlen, and Bill Bratton all deal with stress in one consolidated chapter helps you put it all together. Boggs also adds a few "calls to action" on many of the paragraphs, so you don't get to read it all and walk away with no clue as to what to do to put it into your own life. There is the danger in a book like this to view the people as "perfect", individuals who are hyper-focused and who never make missteps. That's definitely not the case, and there are a few foibles in the different chapters. I think this book works best when you see the underlying principles of importance, paying a bit less attention to the person behind them. There's a wealth of wisdom and examples here, and it's an entertaining read. It's definitely worth reading to see where you need to notch up your performance..."

Bill Bratton: Quote of the Day

"I've always had that degree of confidence that the opportunities will be there. And that I have the requisite skills to take advantage of them. If I get into something I'm not enjoying, I'm not going to spend a lot of time there. Life's too short. I'm going to seek to move on."
